Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and so change the way they feel. A popular model is known as SMART, an acronym for Self Management and Recovery Training. Smart groups are free and can be found in most cities across the nation. Some are used as a secular alternative to Addicts Anonymous. But studying and applying their materials has also been found to be effective means of modifying addicting behavior.
